Our pantry resource guide was updated on Jan. 3, 2024.
Chicago has food benefits programs run by the state and federal government, but these programs often have barriers and waiting periods that make it difficult to access free food immediately.
Borderless compiled a list of neighborhood food pantries or local community organizations that provide access to fresh food and groceries weekly or monthly. The list is organized by Chicago’s 77 community areas. This map can help you find your designated community area.

About the food pantries in this guide:
The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) is the food bank that partners with most of the food pantries in Chicago. The GCFD helps provide pantries with food supplies for distribution.
Pantries with an asterisk (*) in front of their names partner with the Depository.
Some of the GCFD pantries may ask for information and identification, but the policies are different for each pantry. Identification is requested to verify you live near the pantry and is unrelated to your immigration or citizenship status. However, the registration process is usually informal, and you should be able to access food at any pantry without providing identification if you don’t have it.
You can contact a pantry near you before visiting if you have any questions or concerns.
This guide also lists community organizations and mutual aid groups that do not partner with the GCFD and will not ask for identification or other information to access food.
