Aug. 21 – It’s back to school season! Start the school year off right with a new backpack, which you can get on a first-come first-serve basis at Avondale-Logandale Elementary School. Attendees can also receive COVID-19 vaccines, free groceries and flu shots at this community-hosted event.

Aug. 23 – Tigist Reda, chef and owner of Demera Ethiopian Restaurant, is hosting a dinner to support the fight against gender-based violence in her native Tigray. All proceeds from this three-course dinner will go toward Hope 4 Tigray Women, a newly founded nonprofit. Reserve your tickets here, and learn more about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Tigray in our story by reporter Sarah Luyengi.

Aug. 26 – We’re presenting a virtual town hall with PEN America on supporting immigration journalism in Chicago! Maria Zamudio of WBEZ will moderate a panel with local journalists Diane Bou Khalil (our engagement reporter!), Jackie Serrato (South Side Weekly) and Carlos Ballesteros (Injustice Watch). Join the conversation and let us know how journalists can better serve immigrant communities. Register for the free event here.
