Through live actors, original music, documentary video, and photos, “Sanctuary Stories” captures the lives of individuals and communities affected by the federal immigration crackdown. Each night, a Borderless Magazine staff member will share their perspective, reporting on immigration in Chicago.
The preview performance will take place on Thursday, January 15, at 7 pm.
Subsequent performances will run at 7 pm on January 16, 17, 18, 23, and 24.
Inspired by the storytelling tradition of Studs Terkel, “Sanctuary Stories” honors Chicago’s history as a Sanctuary City and celebrates the city’s vibrant theater community. The production portrays clergy who have stepped forward to protect immigrants, a veteran immigration court judge who resigned in protest, a politician compelled to join demonstrators, a young immigrant fearful of losing the life she has built, and a refugee haunted by years of torture endured on the path to the United States.
“Sanctuary Stories” was created by Emmy Award–winning documentarian Craig Duff, a former video journalist with CNN, The New York Times, and Time magazine. Duff is now a professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School. Reporting and interviews were conducted by Stephen Franklin, a Borderless Magazine contributing writer and former Chicago Tribune journalist.
The cast includes Chicago actors Gabriela Barrios, Amber Dow, Zimbo Gessert, Jean Marie Koon, Chuck Munro, Lori Navarrete, and Matt Specht. Duff serves as narrator and created the documentary video elements. Jeff Award–winner Petter Wahlbäck designed the sound and music, with Tessa Huber as stage manager.
The production features the original song “I Come From the World” by Chicago singer-songwriter Flo Estes, performed live, as well as additional live music by musician and theater artist Caroline Kidwell.
