How to stay cool and avoid heatstroke in the city and suburbs during the “heat dome.”
A “heat dome” is driving temperatures up in Chicago and across the Midwest this week. Temperatures are expected to reach over 90 degrees all week.
Neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side are especially vulnerable to extreme heat waves, as Borderless previously reported.

How to Keep Safe in the Heat:
- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and coffee
- Wear sunscreen and sun-protective clothing while outside
- Stay inside, if you can
- If you work outside, take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned area or in the shade
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle
- Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors (you can call 311 to request an official well-being check on someone, if you can’t reach them)
- Know the signs of heatstroke
How to Find a Cooling Center:
Here is a map of cooling centers across Cook County. Chicago parks and libraries also serve as cooling centers during extreme heat. Check in with your local park or library for cooling center locations and hours.
