Republishing Guidelines

Borderless Magazine believes journalism should reach the communities it serves. As a nonprofit newsroom based in Chicago, we produce nonpartisan, multilingual reporting that informs, empowers, and amplifies immigrant communities.

We welcome opportunities to share our reporting with new audiences and work with newsrooms, community organizations, and other mission-aligned organizations interested in republishing Borderless Magazine stories.

All republishing requests must be approved by Borderless Magazine in advance. Permission is granted on a case-by-case basis and applies only to the specific story and use approved by Borderless Magazine.

These guidelines do not apply to existing Borderless Magazine partners whose agreements with us contain different terms.

Quick Approval Criteria

We generally approve republishing requests when:

  • The requester is a news organization, nonprofit, community organization, educational institution, or other mission-aligned organization.
  • The story will be used for editorial, educational, or community-serving purposes.
  • Borderless Magazine has the rights necessary to approve the requested use.
  • The story will remain unchanged.
  • Borderless Magazine and the original author(s) will receive clear and proper credit.
  • The proposed use does not misrepresent Borderless Magazine, our reporting, our sources, or our editorial independence.

Requests involving translations, significant adaptations, third-party materials, sponsored content, commercial uses, or other unusual circumstances may require additional review from our editor.

Requesting Permission: Process and Timing

Borderless Magazine aims to respond to republishing requests within 3 business days.

Please include:

  • The specific story, including the headline and URL
  • Your organization
  • The intended re-publication date
  • The intended platform or format (web, print, newsletter, social, etc.)

Attribution and Credit

Borderless Magazine must always be clearly identified as the original publisher, and the original author or authors must receive proper credit.

For digital

This story was originally published by Borderless Magazine. Sign up for its newsletter to learn the latest about Chicago’s immigrant communities.

For print

This story was originally published by Borderless Magazine, a nonprofit award-winning bilingual news outlet reporting with and on immigrants. Visit borderlessmag.org to learn more and sign up for our newsletter.

The original byline must be preserved. If a story includes multiple authors, photographers, illustrators, or co-reporting partners, all applicable credits must remain intact.

Do not remove, obscure, or replace Borderless Magazine’s attribution or the original author’s byline.

Headlines, Story, and Text

Republished stories should remain identical to the original Borderless Magazine story.

Headlines, decks, body text, captions, and other editorial content may not be altered without prior permission from Borderless Magazine’s editorial staff.

This includes:

  • Rewriting or substantially shortening the headline or dek
  • Editing or rewriting the story
  • Removing sections, paragraphs, quotes, or reporting
  • Adding new reporting or commentary to the republished story
  • Changing the meaning or context of the original story
  • Translating the story into another language

This also includes changes to time-sensitive language. If a story contains language such as “today,” “yesterday,” or “this week,” please contact us before changing it to a specific date or otherwise updating it.

If you would like to adapt, translate, update, excerpt, or otherwise modify a Borderless story, please request permission before publication.

What Can You Republish?

Republishing permission applies only to the specific story for which permission has been granted.

It does not automatically grant permission to republish other Borderless Magazine content, including photographs, illustrations, graphics, videos, audio, newsletters, or other editorial materials.

We may need to confirm that the story is available for republishing and that any applicable rights or restrictions are understood before publication.

Images, Graphics and Multimedia

You must receive specific permission from Borderless Magazine before using our original visual or multimedia materials outside of the approved republished story.

Some images and other materials accompanying our stories may be licensed from third parties. These materials may have separate copyright or licensing restrictions and may not be available for republishing.

Republishers are responsible for obtaining any necessary rights or licenses for third-party materials they use.

You may not:

  • Use a Borderless photograph or graphic independently of the republished story
  • Use Borderless images in your own original reporting without permission
  • Use Borderless multimedia in another story, video, newsletter, or social media project without permission
  • Create a new content package using Borderless photographs, graphics, or multimedia without permission

Newsletters and Email Publications

Borderless Magazine stories may be included in newsletters or other email publications with prior permission from Borderless Magazine and when the guidelines on this page are followed.

Please clearly identify Borderless Magazine as the source and link directly to the original article.

Social Media

When sharing a republished Borderless Magazine story on social media, please tag Borderless Magazine when the platform allows.

When possible, please link to the republished story or the original Borderless Magazine story.

Social Media Collaborations

We are also open to collaborating with newsrooms and organizations on social media posts, including Instagram Collab posts, Reels, videos, and other formats that help introduce Borderless reporting to new audiences.

Social media collaborations must be agreed upon by Borderless Magazine in advance. A collaboration does not transfer ownership of Borderless Magazine’s reporting or other editorial work, and participating organizations may not present Borderless reporting as their own original reporting.

When creating a collaborative post or video using Borderless reporting:

  • Clearly credit Borderless Magazine and the original author or authors.
  • Link or direct audiences to the original Borderless story when possible.
  • Do not substantially alter, misrepresent, or take reporting out of context.
  • Do not use Borderless photographs, graphics, video, audio, or other original materials without permission.
  • Do not use the collaboration to imply a commercial, sponsorship, or paid relationship that does not exist.

Advertising, Paywalls, and Monetization

Republished stories may not be placed behind a hard paywall that prevents readers from accessing the story for free.

Republishers may run standard display advertising alongside a republished story.

Borderless Magazine content may not be used in:

  • Native advertising
  • Sponsored content packages
  • Any placement that implies Borderless Magazine endorses a product, service, organization, or sponsor

Republishers may not sell subscriptions or individual access specifically to Borderless Magazine content.

If a proposed use involves sponsorship, advertising, fundraising, or another commercial arrangement, please disclose this in your request.

Ownership and Editorial Integrity

Republishing a Borderless Magazine story does not transfer ownership or copyright of the story to the republishing organization.

Borderless Magazine and its authors retain their rights to the original reporting and editorial work.

Republishers may not:

  • Present Borderless reporting as their own original reporting
  • Claim ownership of a Borderless story or its reporting
  • Remove Borderless Magazine or author attribution
  • Suggest that the republisher originally reported or produced the story
  • Sell, license, sublicense, or transfer the story to another organization
  • Incorporate substantial portions of Borderless reporting into a new work without permission
  • Give another publication permission to republish the story on their behalf

Republishing permission is limited to the specific use approved by Borderless Magazine.

Corrections, Updates and Removal Requests

Borderless Magazine may request that a republished story or any Borderless material be corrected, updated, or removed.

Republishers agree to respond promptly to reasonable requests concerning:

  • Copyright or licensing issues
  • Privacy or safety concerns
  • Unauthorized use of Borderless materials
  • Editorial or legal concerns
  • Other circumstances where continued publication may create a significant issue for Borderless Magazine or its sources

If Borderless Magazine requests a correction or removal, please work with us to address the issue as soon as reasonably possible.

Liability and Indemnification

Borderless Magazine provides its stories for republishing “as is.” Republishers assume responsibility for their own use of republished content, including compliance with these guidelines and any applicable law.

Republishers agree to indemnify and hold harmless Borderless Magazine, its staff, and its contributors from any claims, damages, or liability arising from the republisher’s unauthorized modification of a story, failure to provide required attribution, or use of the story outside the scope of granted permission.

This section does not limit Borderless Magazine’s own responsibility for the accuracy of its original reporting.
