Borderless launched a photo series highlighting millennials and Gen Z from immigrant communities and we want to hear from you.

Chicago has a long-standing tradition of coming together to uplift and support one another. These efforts have become particularly important for immigrant communities that have been targeted by the federal government’s deportation enforcement.

Across the city, we’ve noticed young people stepping up in big and small ways — keeping their neighbors informed, delivering meals to those most in need or fostering safe spaces and nurturing joy during stressful times.

We want to highlight all of the hard work that goes into caring for your community, which is why we’ve launched Communities of Care—a recurring visual column highlighting the passion projects, organizing efforts and care models led by Gen Z and millennials from immigrant communities.

News that puts power under the spotlight and communities at the center.

For the first edition of this column, we spent time with Javier Ponce to learn more about his passion project, Boards Across Borders. The grassroots mutual aid operation sources new and used skate gear in Chicago and redistributes it at public events in Guatemala City, aiming to uplift the local skate scene.

We want to keep on elevating stories like Boards Across Borders.

Through this column, we aim to share stories of joy, innovation and resistance to expand our understanding of what matters most to you.

This series will focus on:

Passion projects: Niche projects and undertakings you think more people should know about.

Organizing efforts: Community-building efforts or instances of people coming together to make a positive impact

Care models: Exciting or innovative ways people are looking out for each other.
