Borderless Magazine is excited to welcome CJ Ortuño as the organization’s first Chief Development Officer. Ortuño brings nearly 20 years of nonprofit executive leadership to the growing nonprofit news outlet dedicated to covering immigration and immigrant communities. In this key leadership role, Ortuño will lead Borderless’ fundraising strategy and build the organization’s development team.
With a deep background in philanthropy, Ortuño most recently served as Vice President of Philanthropy at Civic News Company, the parent organization of Chalkbeat, Votebeat, and Healthbeat. He led national and local fundraising teams and collaborated with editorial leaders to grow support for nonprofit journalism. He previously served as Vice President and lead development partner at Teach For America, where he designed and scaled a national coaching and training program for over 200 fundraisers.

“The addition of CJ as our first CDO is a huge step in Borderless’ maturity,” said Borderless Cofounder and Executive Director Nissa Rhee. “CJ and the team he will build will help us connect with more readers so we can continue to expand our work at this critical time.”
Known for building strong teams and clear, mission-aligned systems, Ortuño has coached fundraisers at every level, from board members and reporters to executive directors and campaign volunteers. His work consistently reflects a commitment to equity and sustainability in the nonprofit sector.
Ortuño, son of a Cuban-American father and Puerto Rican mother, cares deeply about immigrant communities. “In a time when so many are feeling unheard or unwelcome, Borderless offers something powerful: stories that connect, inform, and remind us of our shared humanity,” Ortuño said. “I’m thrilled to help grow that work.”
Ortuño lives in Chicago with his wife and daughter. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, working out, attending concerts and exploring the world of tea. He can be reached at [email protected].
