Barbarena, que se traslad\u00f3 a Estados Unidos en 2008, sigue esta tradici\u00f3n. Cita como influencia a la grabadora expresionista alemana K\u00e4the Kollwitz, preocupada por la dif\u00edcil situaci\u00f3n de la clase trabajadora. All\u00ed hay muchos artistas: poetas, pintores, cantantes. Crec\u00ed en ese ambiente, yendo a casa de mi abuela con m\u00fasicos y poetas que estaban de visita y manteniendo conversaciones culturales. Tengo dos hermanos que tambi\u00e9n son artistas, as\u00ed que, al crecer en ese ambiente, para m\u00ed fue muy natural empezar a dibujar. El arte en la escuela era muy conservador. Recuerdo que estaba dibujando una botella. Mis hermanos estaban en la escuela nacional de bellas artes de Managua y experimentaban con el cubismo, as\u00ed que dibuj\u00e9 la botella en ese estilo, y el profesor rompi\u00f3 mi dibujo. Me dijo: \"No tienes talento. No s\u00e9 qu\u00e9 haces aqu\u00ed\". Yo ten\u00eda 10 a\u00f1os. No quer\u00eda volver a tocar un l\u00e1piz en mi vida. Sent\u00ed mucha frustraci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Despu\u00e9s de la guerra civil y con el embargo estadounidense en Nicaragua, mi madre me dijo: \"Tienes que irte\". Ten\u00eda 13 a\u00f1os y me fui a Costa Rica a estudiar el bachillerato. Empec\u00e9 a darme cuenta de todas las cosas que sienten los inmigrantes: xenofobia, discriminaci\u00f3n, que eres un criminal, que nos quitas el trabajo. Empec\u00e9 a intentar unir todos esos sentimientos de alguna manera. Fuimos a una galer\u00eda de un hotel, donde una mujer vend\u00eda recuerdos, y le gustaron mis dibujos. Empec\u00e9 a producir m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s. Siempre fue en parte porque quer\u00eda mostrar a la gente qui\u00e9nes somos los nicarag\u00fcenses. Como me mud\u00e9 de Nicaragua, ten\u00eda que encontrar mis propias ra\u00edces y mi propia historia. Hice un p\u00f3ster sobre los pesticidas que est\u00e1n prohibidos en Estados Unidos, pero que este pa\u00eds vende a Centroam\u00e9rica. Una organizaci\u00f3n de derechos laborales llamada ASEPROLA me invit\u00f3 a presentar un cartel sobre los derechos de los trabajadores de las plantaciones bananeras de Costa Rica y el impacto de los pesticidas en el medio ambiente. Mi propuesta gan\u00f3, y la organizaci\u00f3n alemana de comercio justo GEBANA imprimi\u00f3 5.000 carteles para recaudar fondos para los derechos de los trabajadores en Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p>Despu\u00e9s de dibujar, pint\u00e9 durante varios a\u00f1os, y mi trabajo empez\u00f3 a cambiar de nuevo. Era m\u00e1s pol\u00edtico, m\u00e1s sobre la historia de mi pa\u00eds. Era una reflexi\u00f3n sobre los efectos que la guerra tiene en el ser humano, en la psique. Mi pa\u00eds pas\u00f3 de una dictadura -de la familia Somoza, que gobern\u00f3 el pa\u00eds durante 45 a\u00f1os- a una revoluci\u00f3n. Despu\u00e9s de las guerras civiles, tuvimos el embargo, tuvimos a los Contras patrocinados por Estados Unidos. Toda esa gente muriendo por nada. Fue un reto porque nadie quer\u00eda hablar de ello. Mis contempor\u00e1neos hac\u00edan un trabajo m\u00e1s comercial.<\/p>\n<p>Me invitaron a hacer una residencia en M\u00e9xico en 2007. Era mi primera vez en una gran ciudad, con grandes museos. En el Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL), fui a una exposici\u00f3n de Jos\u00e9 Guadalupe Posada. Eso cambi\u00f3 todo para m\u00ed. Su obra era una s\u00e1tira. Dije, yo podr\u00eda hacer esto, porque siempre he tenido el problema de que la gente piense que mi trabajo es muy serio y deprimente. Ese fue el d\u00eda en que decid\u00ed ser grabador. Quer\u00eda ser como Posada. Volv\u00ed a Nicaragua y, con uno de mis hermanos, empec\u00e9 a hacer giras por Nicaragua, mostrando las t\u00e9cnicas, que hab\u00eda aprendido en un centro cultural de mi ciudad natal, la Casa de Los Tres Mundos. Eso fue lo otro que aprend\u00ed all\u00ed, c\u00f3mo el grabado es siempre una comunidad de artistas que comparten. Tras mudarme a Estados Unidos en 2008 y unirme al Instituto Gr\u00e1fico de Chicago, empezamos a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.institutograficodechicago.org\/about-grabadolandia\">Grabadolandia<\/a> en 2013. Se trata de un festival de grabado de tres d\u00edas abierto a la comunidad, que ofrece a la gente la oportunidad de aprender sobre el grabado. Todo es gratuito. Los artistas no tienen que pagar nada. Pueden vender sus obras all\u00ed -les pedimos que tengan obras asequibles para que todo el mundo pueda llevarse arte a casa- y hacen una demostraci\u00f3n. Siempre es incre\u00edble ver a los ni\u00f1os jugando con los sellos y aprendiendo sobre ellos.<\/p>\n<p>Empiezo con una idea y una imagen de referencia, como una fotograf\u00eda, y dibujo en un trozo de lin\u00f3leo o madera, haciendo mi propio dise\u00f1o. Luego esculpo alrededor de esas l\u00edneas. Con el grabado, al tener m\u00faltiplos, puedes llegar a m\u00e1s gente. La gente siempre dice que es una t\u00e9cnica m\u00e1s democr\u00e1tica, y lo es, porque esa obra puede estar al mismo tiempo en un museo, en una galer\u00eda, en la calle o en una camiseta. Es una reflexi\u00f3n sobre los ciclos de represi\u00f3n y resistencia, y la relaci\u00f3n de la resistencia con la di\u00e1spora. La gente siempre ha venido aqu\u00ed en busca del sue\u00f1o americano.<\/p>\n<p>Mi serie \"Esenciales: For your colonizer comfort\", que est\u00e1 expuesta, rinde homenaje a los trabajadores agr\u00edcolas, en su mayor\u00eda indocumentados, y crea conciencia sobre por qu\u00e9 son \"trabajadores esenciales\". Pero formamos parte de esta cadena alimentaria.<\/p>\n<p>En los \u00faltimos cuatro a\u00f1os, he o\u00eddo por todas partes ese discurso de odio contra los inmigrantes: que simplemente estamos aqu\u00ed y no hacemos nada. Mi arte es una forma de decir: \"Estamos aqu\u00ed y nos vamos a quedar, nos guste o no. Estamos dando a este pa\u00eds, pero no estamos recibiendo los mismos frutos que el resto\".
