Aqu\u00ed, este restaurante propiedad de inmigrantes mexicanos encaja a la perfecci\u00f3n. Vibrantes murales de arte popular mexicano alegran los escaparates, un hombre cuece elotes al vapor en un carrito cercano y los ni\u00f1os corretean jugando. El aire siempre huele a carne cocida, la fragancia que emana de los negocios locales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/es\/2021\/07\/21\/el-restaurante-5-rabanitos-ubicado-en-pilsen-sobrevive-a-la-pandemia-con-el-apoyo-de-la-comunidad\/\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Read in English<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 2018, Forbes consider\u00f3 a Pilsen uno de los principales \"<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/annabel\/2018\/06\/22\/the-12-coolest-neighborhoods-around-the-world\/?sh=26929d866eb1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los 12 barrios m\u00e1s chulos del mundo\".<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> junto a barrios de \u00c1msterdam, Barcelona y Ciudad del Cabo. El creciente protagonismo del barrio ha intensificado el aburguesamiento, que sigue desplazando a muchas de las familias de inmigrantes mexicanos y estadounidenses de origen mexicano que desde hace tiempo viven en la zona. Un elemento fijo de esta comunidad es <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/5rabanitosdotcom.wordpress.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 Rabanitos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alfonso Sotelo, que dej\u00f3 su hogar en Ixcapuzalco, una peque\u00f1a ciudad de Guerrero (M\u00e9xico), cuando ten\u00eda 15 a\u00f1os, en 1991. Aterriz\u00f3 en Pilsen despu\u00e9s de vivir en California y desde hace tiempo se dedica a ayudar a Pilsen a mantener su identidad mexicana al tiempo que acoge a los reci\u00e9n llegados.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">Durante m\u00e1s de dos d\u00e9cadas, Sotelo ha trabajado en restaurantes de Chicago, como Frontera Grill y la ya desaparecida West Town Tavern, antes de tener su propio restaurante. Pero este \u00faltimo a\u00f1o ha sido diferente a todos los que ha vivido en el sector de la restauraci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aunque 5 Rabanitos recibi\u00f3 apoyo de la ciudad durante la pandemia de COVID-19 a trav\u00e9s de <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/es\/2021\/07\/08\/en-la-reapertura-de-chicago-los-restauradores-inmigrantes-reflexionan-sobre-un-ano-sin-precedentes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el Programa de Subvenciones para Hosteler\u00eda de Chicago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotelo segu\u00eda luchando por mantener vivo su restaurante.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Como parte de nuestro <a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/es\/categoria\/restaurantes-de-inmigrantes-de-chicagos-durante-el-covid-19\/\">serie sobre c\u00f3mo los restaurantes de inmigrantes han sobrevivido a la pandemia<\/a>Sotelo cont\u00f3 su historia a Borderless Magazine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fue muy duro cuando llegu\u00e9 a Estados Unidos. Nadie sab\u00eda qui\u00e9n era. Escrib\u00ed en un papelito: \"Busco trabajo\". Esta fue mi primera frase: pedir trabajo. Si la gente no lo entend\u00eda, cog\u00eda mi libro de traducci\u00f3n ingl\u00e9s-espa\u00f1ol y les ense\u00f1aba las palabras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Es muy duro, sobre todo cuando llegas muy joven. Pero me sent\u00ed muy feliz porque aprend\u00ed mucho de la experiencia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siempre pensaba en el barrio: Pilsen. Siempre. En Pilsen hay muchos espa\u00f1oles, muchos mexicanos. Hay m\u00fasica mexicana y muchas razas diferentes vienen a escuchar la m\u00fasica. Hay muchos murales y est\u00e1n pasando muchas cosas. Cuando encontr\u00e9 este restaurante, vi la oportunidad de tener mi propio negocio. Me gusta Pilsen. Les dije: \"Voy a abrir un local\", y mi padre me dijo: \"\u00bfPor qu\u00e9? Tienes un trabajo muy bueno\".\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dije: \"No, es hora de abrir mi propio local. Es hora de abrir mis alas. Es hora de volar - dejar volar mi imaginaci\u00f3n, \u00bfsabes? Y voy a poner 5 Rabinatos como nombre\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 5 Rabanitos?\" dijo mi familia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuando era un beb\u00e9, mi padre ten\u00eda una peque\u00f1a granja. Cultivaban rabanitos, o r\u00e1banos, y los utiliz\u00e1bamos en la cocina. Cuando los rabanitos estaban listos para vender, mi padre dec\u00eda: \"Chicos, ten\u00e9is que ir a vender rabanitos al pueblo\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yo era uno de cinco hermanos. Los clientes miraban a los cinco ni\u00f1os y dec\u00edan: \"Los rabanitos, los rabanitos\". Cuando miraban a un ni\u00f1o, dec\u00edan: \"El rabanito\", pero cuando miraban a los cinco, \"Cinco rabanitos\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As\u00ed que le dije a mi padre: \"Es parte de mi familia\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bfY sabes qu\u00e9? No es mucho - $10.000 - pero en estos tiempos dif\u00edciles, un poco hace mucho. Solicitamos el Programa de Protecci\u00f3n del Salario y nos lo concedieron. Llam\u00e9 a los 19 empleados y les dije: \"Venid todos\", porque el dinero es para ellos. Todos mis empleados (trabajadores), ese dinero es para ellos. No utilizamos nada para el restaurante.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todo el mundo trabaja para m\u00ed desde hace mucho tiempo. Los cocineros y los preparadores llevan 20 a\u00f1os trabajando conmigo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Por eso digo que es un restaurante familiar. Son parte de mi familia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilsen forma parte de mi vida. Cincuenta a\u00f1os no es demasiado viejo, y he vivido la mayor parte del tiempo en Pilsen. Ahora mismo es muy duro.
