She said staff members at a shelter in Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez advised her not to attempt to cross the border and request asylum, advice she regretted following when the pandemic restrictions began.<\/p>\n<p>She was told May 3 that she would be allowed to cross into El Paso the next day under a special humanitarian exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all changed in an instant. I didn\u2019t sleep at all the whole night. It was fear that they would say, \u2018Oh no, never mind,\u2019 or that it would be very hard,\u201d Coreas said, speaking in Spanish from El Paso on May 5.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11075\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/CB_SusanaCoreas-3293-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Susana Coreas puts in earrings in her room at Casa de Colores in Ju\u00e1rez on April 12. (Corrie Boudreaux\/El Paso Matters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>H\u00e9ctor Ruiz, an attorney with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafedreamersproject.org\/\"> Santa Fe Dreamers Project<\/a> who specializes in helping queer and trans migrants like Correas, said that two new processes are in place that allow a limited number of vulnerable migrants to enter the United States. Ruiz uses they\/them pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>One is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/hamedaleaziz\/immigrants-humanitarian-exemptions-us-border\"> related<\/a> to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union alleging that Title 42 violates immigration statutes and constitutes an unlawful denial of the right to seek asylum. The advocacy organization has called on the Biden administration to end the use of Title 42 for rapid border expulsions.<\/p>\n<p>The other process will be more formalized as a \u201cconsortium,\u201d a collaborative process between non-governmental organizations and the U.S. government to facilitate the crossing of vulnerable groups, Ruiz said.<\/p>\n<p>For Coreas, the process of entering the United States went much more smoothly than she imagined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting it, but the people were very, very nice. The treatment was dignified, very good,\u201d she said. \u201cThey only had us there for two and a half hours. Which until now, is the shortest time that I know of for people that have crossed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said their organization has helped 15 to 18 transgender migrants enter the United States so far through this exception process, but said the total number could be higher.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries for transgender and queer people because of heightened risks of homophobic and transphobic crime, experts say. It is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/trans-women-mexico-fight-justice-murders-go-unpunished-n1051886\">second deadliest country in the world for trans people<\/a>, according to a study by advocacy group Letra S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust by virtue of being trans and queer [these migrants] face heightened vulnerability,\u201d Ruiz said.<\/p>\n<p>After experiencing issues related to her gender identity at several shelters in Ju\u00e1rez, Coreas established &#8212; \u201caccidentally,\u201d she said &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2021\/03\/11\/the-family-that-transgender-asylum-seekers-built\/\">the Casa de Colores shelter <\/a>in November of 2020. The space is devoted to providing a home for trans migrants. The majority of the residents at Casa de Colores are trans women, but at least one trans man has stayed at the shelter since it opened.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11081\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/CB_TransMigrants-3459-scaled-e1620246019371-1024x555.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Residents of Casa de Colores, a shelter for transgender migrants in Ju\u00e1rez, pose for rooftop selfies on April 12. (Corrie Boudreaux\/El Paso Matters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Coreas holds no illusions that the United States is a place free of discrimination against trans people, but her experiences so far have made her optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until now, 80 percent of the help that we\u2019ve received (and) that we survive on has come from the United States,\u201d she said, referring to donations that support Casa de Colores and its residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a lot of support and I don\u2019t have any experience with discrimination here. I can\u2019t say there\u2019s no discrimination here, but really from what they\u2019ve told me, the people who have more experience here, is that there is much less discrimination here than what we lived through in our countries, or what we lived in Ju\u00e1rez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coreas faces a long court process to determine whether she will receive asylum. But she sees hope in the changes that have allowed her to finally gain entry to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, we are getting this opportunity after a year and a half of waiting &#8212; some girls have even waited for two years, so there is hope for all the others,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are people, who can live here freely.
