Michelle Kanaar\/Borderless Magazine<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up in the Chicago area, Amara Enyia remembers men from Nigeria coming to her family home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[They] visited our house a lot,\u201d the <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/amaraenyia.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">former Chicago mayoral candidate<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said. \u201cI always thought they were just our parents\u2019 friends, but later on my parents told me they were emissaries from the government trying to dissuade and intimidate us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That memory came back to her in recent weeks as <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">youth-led protests in Nigeria continue<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> with organizers demanding the end of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious police unit accused of torture, ill treatment, and extra-judicial execution. Since October, thousands have taken to the streets in cities from Lagos to Abuja and drawn global attention. Between November 1 and December 31 NewsMatch will match your new monthly donation 12x or triple your one-time gift, all up to $5,000.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><a class=\"pk-button pk-button-md pk-button-primary pk-font-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" >\n\t\t\t Donate \n\t\t<\/a><\/h4>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Muhammadu Buhari, a key architect of SARS, has attempted to placate protestors by redeploying SARS officers in other departments and most<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-54531449\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently creating SWAT<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> a police unit aiming to fill the roles left by SARS.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the movement continues to grow: It has expanded to include calls to end police brutality and corruption, with support spreading throughout the world on social media through the hashtag<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/endsarsnow\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ENDSARSNOW<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Enyia, the struggles in Africa and ongoing uprisings in the United States have grown to become one and the same<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Now 37<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the public policy strategist and two-time Chicago mayoral candidate has witnessed mass demonstration in her home city, including the protests that followed the 2014 police murder of Laquan McDonald and subsequent cover-up. As she continues to advocate for social justice in her communities, she believes that these systemic issues run deep and not only link but also disproportionately affect Black people in the African diaspora.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The connections are hard to ignore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are parallel experiences,\u201d Enyia said. \u201cWe\u2019re fighting the same fight, and we need to learn from each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_4165\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4165\" class=\"wp-image-4165 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/111820_AmaraEnyia-6-web.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago, Black Lives Matter, SARS, Nigeria, police, violence, protest, black, African\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amara Enyia at the Garfield Park Fieldhouse on Nov. 18, 2020 in Chicago, Ill. This is a special place for Enyia, who lives nearby, and holds it as &#8220;a symbol of so many beautiful\u00a0places on the west side that get overlooked.&#8221; According to Enyia, in order to see structural change in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, officials\u00a0need to &#8220;listen to proposals by grassroots movements and incorporate them into policies\u00a0for this country.&#8221; There needs to be a &#8220;willingness to be bold,&#8221; Enyia says, &#8220;and step outside the status quo in the proposal of policies.&#8221; Michelle Kanaar\/Borderless Magazine<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Black Lives Matter is reportedly<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the largest movement in American history<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> with an average of 140 demonstrations per day since the murder of George Floyd by police on May 26. Over the years, as the movement has gained more national recognition and support in the face of ongoing police brutality, African immigrants in America have increasingly had to grapple with their role in discussions surrounding race relations in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Black and Brown Americans have led nationwide debates over social justice reform and the defunding and abolition of the police, discourse surrounding the BLM movement has become more prominent within the African migrant community. In Chicago alone,<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/08\/16\/chicago-police-misconduct-racial-disparity\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reported<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 72 percent of Black Americans and 15 percent of Hispanics have been victims of police violence between 2005 and 2015.<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/file\/925846\/download\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago Police Department internal files<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also shown that officers are 14 times more likely to use excessive force against Black men than white men. And an influx of African migrants to the United States in recent years has led to a growing conversation of diverse voices surrounding these issues. According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chicago Tribune, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago\u2019s African immigrant<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-xpm-2013-01-14-ct-met-african-immigration-20130114-story.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population quadrupled<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 1990 and 2013 to an estimated 42,300 with groups largely from Nigeria, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enyia\u2019s parents came to Chicago from Nigeria with the intention of returning home. But they had been vocal against Nigeria\u2019s dictators and decided it was safer for them to settle in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chicago, her parents joined the Nigerian National Alliance, which was founded in 1989 as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an umbrella organization for the 20 or so Nigerian organizations that existed in the Chicago metropolitan area at that time. NNA\u2019s goal was to unite the greater Nigerian community and to push for democracy, human rights, and environmental justice in Nigeria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While earlier generations were more<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/10\/should-immigration-require-assimilation\/406759\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned with assimilation<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> fresh conversations are now emerging within the Chicago African immigrant community about<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2020\/6\/22\/21299153\/african-american-police-congolese-refugee-george-floyd-patrick-reponse-protests?fbclid=IwAR3fKhXc7lTcRUcWBDDrYUinadrW20uh0lV-cC2v9GDwb5bA1UAP_QQysik\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rethinking what cultural identity<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means for them. For some, BLM has marked a turning point: They are beginning to view the struggles of Black Americans as their own.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re still building a culture of unity,\u201d said Enyia. \u201cPeople are being more open to how we work as a collective, and we\u2019re learning who we are. There\u2019s a greater sense of understanding each other even though we have differences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 30, Enyia participated in a webinar that brought together a diverse lineup of Africans in the greater Chicago area to discuss the historical circumstances that have led to today\u2019s overlapping atmospheres of civil unrest in Nigeria and the United States. Hosted by <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Chicago Nigerians<\/span>\u00a0and other local community groups, the seminar attracted dozens of viewers and sparked discussions of white supremacy, government corruption, and police brutality.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-4163-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/video.wixstatic.com\/video\/7a45ab_88093a22974f4e92a0cb37ee075a15eb\/1080p\/mp4\/file.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/video.wixstatic.com\/video\/7a45ab_88093a22974f4e92a0cb37ee075a15eb\/1080p\/mp4\/file.mp4\">https:\/\/video.wixstatic.com\/video\/7a45ab_88093a22974f4e92a0cb37ee075a15eb\/1080p\/mp4\/file.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Olivier Kamanzi, chairman of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/africangcc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa Global Chamber of Commerce<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, expressed his support for Pan-Africanism during the panel and emphasized that indigenous and diaspora peoples of African descent should be unified. \u201cWe must show our solidarity,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must rely on ourselves and continue the Pan-African founding fathers\u2019 fight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Bibiann Lebechi, director of the healthcare provider <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.docsunltd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors Unlimited Service Corporation<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> believes that the source of today\u2019s civil unrest in the Black community lies in rules and power structures instituted by white supremacists and colonists in years past. \u201cWhether it&#8217;s End SARS or it&#8217;s Apartheid or Black Lives Matters, we are all in the same root cause,&#8221; she said. &#8220;White supremacy is the main issue that actually links all of these no matter where it&#8217;s happening in any part of the Black world.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chidinma Olu, a young protestor based in Nigeria, echoed a similar sentiment. She said she and other protesters were shocked by the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lekki_massacre\">October 20 Lekki massacre<\/a><\/span>, where the Nigerian Army shot and killed at least 12 End SARS protesters during a peaceful rally. &#8220;It was beyond low and it was unexpected. We have seen many things over here but we have not seen the Nigerian government decide, &#8216;OK, we want to eradicate these people because they are speaking up for themselves,'&#8221; she said. &#8220;It makes you wonder: How is this government going to change when its people are suffering and speaking up they are still covering their ears up and saying we don&#8217;t want to hear you?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Emmanuel Abidemi, a Nigerian and owner of the local restaurant group <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Bolatcatering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolat African Cuisine Inc<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">.<\/span>, the recent youth-led actions in both continents should recognize the potential of homegrown campaigns to become global movements. \u201cIt&#8217;s an awakening of a people, I don&#8217;t want us to lose sight of that&#8221; said Abidemi. &#8220;Out of all the slaves you have in the United States, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/africa\/1890291\/why-so-many-african-americans-have-nigerian-ancestry\/\">3.5 million out of the 12.5 million [enslaved people] that came to the [Americas] are Nigerians<\/a><\/span> &#8230; So the struggle of every Nigerian that is going on right now relates to the struggle that we are having in the United States.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enyia remains hopeful and believes that both the End SARS and Black Lives Matter protests represent just the beginning of a long overdue movement.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to redefine what public safety means and learn what creates safe communities because it\u2019s not the police,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and we\u2019ve used policing as the hammer. We have to force systematic change and not just cosmetics.
