Without the CTU\u2019s backing this time, she faces a challenge from Erika Diaz-Chavez, a project manager at the Chicago Park District who attended private schools growing up. They also want to ensure CPS is doing enough to protect immigrant families amid increased immigration enforcement in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">But their views diverge on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2026\/08\/03\/fifteen-more-schools-join-sustainable-community-schools-program\/\" rel=\"\">Sustainable Community Schools,<\/a> a program favored by the CTU that gives dozens of schools additional funds to partner with community organizations and provide extra services for families. The CTU represents roughly 30,000 teachers and other CPS staff and is known for its strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2019\/10\/8\/21109097\/chicago-where-the-teachers-union-s-demands-extend-far-past-salary-is-the-latest-front-for-common-goo\/\" rel=\"\">focus on social justice issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Diaz-Chavez isn\u2019t sure the model, which is now enshrined in CTU\u2019s contract, is delivering results and wants to evaluate the program before spending more money on it. She\u2019s worked and volunteered with several Southwest Side schools. She also served as the Latino outreach director for JB Pritzker\u2019s gubernatorial campaign in 2022. Most recently, she was deputy campaign manager for Patty Garcia, who is running for Garcia\u2019s seat in the 4th Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Lopez\u2019s priorities include protecting immigrant families and increasing services to support student mental health. She recently called on the mayor\u2019s office to move forward with creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2026\/09\/14\/mayors-office-opens-applications-for-noncitizen-advisory-board\/\" rel=\"\">school board advisory panel<\/a> focused on the needs of noncitizen students and families, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2025\/10\/09\/chicago-mayor-has-not-appointed-noncitizen-advisory-board\/?ref=board-rule.ghost.io\" rel=\"\">as required by state law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">SEIU, which endorsed Lopez, is a top contributor to her campaign, as it was in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">This time, however, she is not supported by the CTU. How do we do the best we can for these kids academically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Diaz-Chavez grew up in the Pilsen area and attended Catholic schools in Chicago and suburban Oak Park. She is a parent but does not send her children to CPS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">She is endorsed and financially backed by The Urban Center, the pro-school choice political group. Diaz-Chavez says she would be an independent voice on the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">\u201cI want to make sure that we can work with everybody, not just people who align the same way I do or are part of a slate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Diaz-Chavez said it would be easier to make decisions that are best for the district in the long term if there were more independent voices. That includes analyzing what to do when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2025\/06\/13\/chicago-public-schools-declining-enrollment-causes-small-schools-high-costs\/\" rel=\"\">school closure moratorium expires next summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">\u201cNobody wants to see schools close,\u201d she said.
