Rios Sierra is backed by the CTU and the Service Employees International Union Illinois State Council, which represents thousands of CPS support staff and has split politically with the teachers union in recent years. Rios Sierra was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2026\/02\/25\/cps-school-board-closing-in-on-ceo-finalists\/\" rel=\"\">working group<\/a> to pick Macquline King, Chicago Public Schools\u2019 new CEO, and she voted for the most recent CPS budget that hinged on receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2026\/07\/31\/seeking-to-reverse-layoffs-chicago-school-board-approves-budget-assuming-more-state-money-will-come\/\" rel=\"\">$150 million more in state funding.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">She has voted to protect immigrant students from federal officials and to support the creation of a sustainable transition plan for families impacted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/chicago\/2026\/02\/11\/chicago-public-schools-charter-financial-problems\/\" rel=\"\">charter closings such as Aspira and Acero schools.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Born in Mexico City and raised in Logan Square, Rios Sierra spent years <a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2020\/05\/26\/mi-tocaya-giving-out-free-meals-in-logan-square-its-great-for-the-restaurant-and-for-the-neighborhood\/\" rel=\"\">organizar<\/a> with the nonprofit Palenque LSNA, working with students, families, and teachers on arts programming and <a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2023\/08\/07\/tamal-fest-2023-will-bring-home-cooked-latin-american-food-and-crafts-to-hermosa\/\" rel=\"\">eventos<\/a>; fighting for affordable housing and local immigration reform; and organizing wellness workshops for over 200 parent mentors. I actually do know what it means to defend people in open court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Originally from Aurora, Gonzales lives with his wife and 2-year-old son, whom he plans to send to a CPS school. He has lived in Avondale since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">A senior legal advisor for the Illinois Secretary of State, Gonzales was the first in his family to attend college. He has volunteered as a tutor with Reach Out Community Center in Little Village and Midtown-Metro Achievement Centers in Little Italy. He\u2019s also on the board of the Institute of Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, which gives Latino college students volunteer opportunities with Chicago law firms with a focus on immigrant rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Gonzales wants to represent the area to better even out the district\u2019s budget among schools and advocate for equitable wages for staff, funding for after-school programs, and resources to improve academic outcomes for students.
