But the students they set out to protect haven&#8217;t just been passive recipients of that support. Many have found ways to move forward, even while living under fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel, a sophomore at Curie who asked for his last name to be withheld, was distracted in his classes when Trump returned to office. He worried for his and his parents\u2019 safety amid Trump\u2019s deportation enforcement. Despite the worries, his counselor and school have helped in navigating mental health and economic difficulties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the ICE raids increased across the Chicago area, the economic situation for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family worsened as his parents weren\u2019t able to work as much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere has been a point where my family has had some economic issues because with everything that&#8217;s been happening,\u201d he said. \u201cMy parents haven&#8217;t had the most amount of work, and [my counselor] has contacted me directly about a scholarship fund.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone flex_gap_desktop_10px \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69fa1f58a62c5\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; \"><div class=\"row-bg-wrap\" data-bg-animation=\"none\" data-bg-animation-delay=\"\" data-bg-overlay=\"false\"><div class=\"inner-wrap row-bg-layer\" ><div class=\"row-bg viewport-desktop\"  style=\"\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"row_col_wrap_12 col span_12 dark left\">\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone flex_gap_desktop_10px \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-8 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col padding-3-percent inherit_tablet inherit_phone flex_gap_desktop_10px \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<h2 id=\"meeting-students-and-their-families-most-immediate-needs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meeting students and their families&#8217; most immediate needs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students at a Southwest Side High School, the shift was palpable when teachers began showing up differently. Sophie Bauer Schmidt Sweeney, a social studies teacher at Curie, coordinated with bilingual staff to launch regular sanctuary meetings and organized fellow teachers to sign up for ICE watch shifts outside the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel mentioned that the sanctuary groups were most necessary since they gave students a better understanding of what to do during ICE presence, gave them a safe space and more compassion for one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes teachers didn&#8217;t necessarily have to say anything. Sweeney said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow Curie teacher Maria Chavez added that the sanctuary group extended its reach beyond the classroom through fundraisers and food drives to support students and their families when their needs were most immediate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roosevelt High School has followed in the footsteps of similar sanctuary groups. Johanna Tello, a teacher at Marine Leadership Academy and the parent of a student at Roosevelt, said the sanctuary groups have been helpful in calming her son\u2019s fear and in warning the community about ICE interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her son, she said, has been in constant fear of his father, a legal permanent resident, being taken away by ICE. He has been asking Tello questions regarding ICE and has been worried by what he\u2019s seen on the news and hearing stories of kids being separated from their parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary groups have been reassuring multiple families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI talked to him about it, and I let him know that there were people [who] were helping and taking care of the community, not just our family, and that was helpful,\u201d Tello said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite support to alleviate his worries, the fear her son feels remains. It\u2019s driven, in part, by ICE\u2019s indiscriminate targeting of communities regardless of immigration status, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"very-silent-halls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery silent halls\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Marine Leadership Academy, teacher Emily Porter watched attendance drop sharply as ICE activity intensified. Parents stopped letting their children take public transit. Students who left school to check on a family member sometimes didn&#8217;t return for days \u2014 or at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They go to their trusted adult, they don&#8217;t come back to school. They disappear \u2014 and it&#8217;s all due to the fact that either someone has been apprehended and now the family can&#8217;t pay bills, don&#8217;t have a place to live, or they&#8217;re too scared to leave,&#8221; Porter said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absences told their own story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind each one was a student weighing their education against their family&#8217;s safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those days affected the whole school as much as they did at Curie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo one wanted to talk because everyone knew what was happening,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cIt was just very silent in the halls and usually they\u2019re very crowded, but on days [when] raids would happen, they would have [empty] space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Lincoln Park High School, librarian and media specialist Andronike Giannopoulos said students of all backgrounds came forward with concerns, not just for themselves, but for friends, neighbors, and classmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our staff was also very concerned for our students, for our population, and our students of color who might be targeted because of their nationality or immigration status,&#8221; Giannopoulos said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"building-a-compassion-fund\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building a compassion fund<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Von Steuben Metropolitan High School, staff formed a sanctuary team mirroring efforts at Curie and Lincoln Park, including ICE patrols, Know Your Rights seminars, and a compassion fund designed to ease the practical burdens fear creates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to build a compassion fund so that we can support families in small ways, whether it&#8217;s through groceries or Uber gift cards,&#8221;
