\" class=\"vc_col-sm-5 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column neg-marg no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"   data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"wpb_raw_code wpb_raw_html wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"_form_1\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.bluelena.io\/f\/embed.php?id=1\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<h2 id=\"should-i-look-for-an-attorney\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I look for an attorney?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mosley recommended that people who are undocumented seek a consultation to learn about their rights and the paths available to them for deportation relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;Anybody that does not have permanent immigration status that hasn&#8217;t done a one-on-one consultation should try it, so they&#8217;re aware of their options,\u201d said Koop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, it is a good idea to seek out an immigration attorney when dealing with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family separation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family reunification<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visas (such as EB-5 investment-based visa, H-1B work visas, F-1 student visas or K-1 fianc\u00e9 visas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Permanent residency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employment issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deportation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detention<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application denial<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturalization<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discretionary relief<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asylum application<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Attorneys can assess your situation and help develop a plan in case you or a family member is detained, including who will have legal authority over children if they are left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Once somebody is detained, finding free legal help on short notice may be difficult, especially with kids, said Koop.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-can-immigrants-find-free-or-affordable-immigration-lawyers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where can immigrants find free or affordable immigration lawyers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chicago Legal Protection Fund provides funding to legal service providers to provide free legal referrals and representation to Chicago immigrants. NIJC, one of these providers, offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantjustice.org\/for-immigrants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free legal services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantjustice.org\/for-immigrants\/services\/immigration-court-helpdesk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hotline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for unrepresented people in the Chicago and Indianapolis Immigration Courts. They also say a red flag that a service might be a scam is when it fails to provide a written contract to its clients that clearly outlines the terms of service and pricing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a licensed immigration attorney or an accredited representative \u2014 both of whom are practitioners authorized by the Department of Justice to represent individuals in immigration matters \u2014 may legally provide advice in immigration law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To review an attorney\u2019s credibility and reputation, you can check to see if they are listed on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isba.org\/public\/illinoislawyerfinder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state\u2019s bar website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and check to see if there are any disciplinary actions against the lawyer.
