This, she said, led to health complications and potential signs of kidney disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69e75fe994f4f\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row vc_row-o-equal-height vc_row-flex vc_row-o-content-middle large top_margin_20px bottom_margin_20px\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; \" class=\"vc_col-sm-5 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column neg-marg no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"   data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"wpb_raw_code wpb_raw_html wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"_form_1\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.bluelena.io\/f\/embed.php?id=1\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>Lowe said the consulate eventually got Pinyerd her medication, but not an independent medical evaluation to ensure she could safely make the 19-hour flight back to the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a medical flight risk,\u201d Lowe said. \u201cI&#8217;d been asking for the [medical examination] records before Christmas, and I never got them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the Trump administration arrests and detains a record number of noncitizens with and without legal status, many immigrants like Rebecca Pinyerd and their loved ones are relying on Chicago\u2019s consulates to help those in detention.<\/p>\n<p>Consulates can conduct welfare checks on immigrants in detention and can play an important role in supporting a country\u2019s nationals abroad, according to Katie Tobin, a faculty advisor at the University of Chicago who worked on migration policy in the White House under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>However, the level of support available varies by consulate, leaving some seeking help feeling trapped or hopeless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like we\u2019re talking for no reason,\u201d Lowe said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69e75fe997258\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; It has been active since 2013 and receives an average of more than 700 calls per day across the United States and Canada, the consulate shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think [these policies are] a response of this particular moment, with the increase in both the number of deportations, but also in the anti-immigrant rhetoric,\u201d Olea said. \u201cIt\u2019s a public policy response that [countries with significant migration flows] want to protect their nationals abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, programs like those offered by the Mexican consulate are unavailable to other immigrant communities seeking support, like Lowe and her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no sense of urgency or commitment to migrants or nationals \u2014 as far as Filipino nationals and migrants,\u201d Lowe said.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippine consulate said in an email that they coordinate with relevant U.S. authorities to conduct regular welfare checks, coordinate communication with families and provide assistance for basic needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Philippine Consulate General in Chicago extends appropriate assistance to Filipinos detained on immigration-related charges in the Midwest, while respecting U.S. laws as well as individual privacy,\u201d the Philippine Consulate of Chicago said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the support each consulate provides is dependent on how much money and resources a country\u2019s government wants to invest in its consulates, Tobin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Mexico, for instance, they have chosen to invest a lot in their consulates in the U.S., because they \u2026 have such a large diaspora in the United States,\u201d Tobin said.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Gil Garcia, founder of the Illinois Venezuelan Alliance, said the importance of having consular support is demonstrated by the Venezuelan community in Chicago, which has not had a consulate since it closed in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69e75fe99f8a3\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row article-image\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; So I see myself having to just stay put here.
