However, this has fueled a renewed sense of pride in Nazario\u2019s work and that of other Chicano, or Mexican American, tattoo artists in Chicago as they use their skills to push back on false narratives criminalizing Latino immigrants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These Chicano tattoo artists have been fundraising for immigrant rights, supporting mutual aid efforts and sharing political messages while evolving their skills to keep their passion for tattooing alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fear of being targeted is real, but so is pride,\u201d Nazario said. \u201cHaving so much pride that it develops into bravery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"using-tattoos-to-criminalize-latinos\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using tattoos to criminalize Latinos<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since January, the Trump administration has focused its agenda on the mass deportation and detention of immigrants and noncitizens, disproportionately impacting Latino communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/usa\/2025-08-14\/trump-administration-defends-use-of-racial-profiling-to-detain-immigrants.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">openly argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in favor of using racial profiling to make arrests. In California, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/24pdf\/25a169_5h25.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court green-lit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents targeting suspects based primarily on apparent race or ethnicity, whether they have an accent, the type of work they do, and presence at locations such as car washes or agricultural sites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Government \u2026 has all but declared that all Latinos, U.S. citizens or not, who work low wage jobs are fair game to be seized at any time,\u201d Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent of the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, Gregory Bovino, commander-at-large of the U.S. Border Patrol, told WBEZ that agents under his watch have arrested people based partly on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/immigration\/2025\/09\/30\/transcript-audio-gregory-bovino-immigrant-arrests-downtown-chicago-chosen-how-they-look\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how they look<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tattoos have become one of the characteristics that agents take into account when considering a person\u2019s appearance, with federal immigration authorities arguing that some tattoos indicate criminal ties to groups such as the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. Law enforcement experts told the New York Times that <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/us\/tattoos-gangs-tren-de-aragua-immigration.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tattoos alone are not sufficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prove someone is a member of a criminal group. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69d50e70edd47\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; and &#8220;dad\u201d and a pocket watch became the justification for their alleged Tren de Aragua ties. The men were then deported to El Salvador\u2019s mega-prison under the Alien Enemies Act, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ice-tattoos-tren-de-aragua-venezuela-gang\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBS reported.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man from El Salvador who lived in Maryland for more than a decade, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-deportations-africa-00604195\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegally deported to El Salvador<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/04\/18\/dhs-releases-bombshell-investigative-report-kilmar-abrego-garcia-suspected-human\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DHS claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his finger tattoos reflected ties to the MS-13 gang, despite gang experts telling CNN that Abrego Garcia\u2019s tattoos had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/01\/politics\/abrego-garcias-tattoos-explainer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cnothing\u201d that was \u201cdefinitively gang representative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, a fired Department of Justice lawyer overseeing immigration cases said he was told to lie about Abrego Garcia\u2019s criminal history and to argue that he was an MS-13 member to prevent his return to the United States. The lawyer, Erez Reuveni, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/erez-reuveni-justice-department-whistleblower-kilmar-abrego-garcia-60-minutes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fired after refusing to sign a brief falsely calling Abrego Garcia a terrorist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to CBS News.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. justice system has long used tattoos to designate people \u2014 often Black and Latino men and youth \u2014 as gang members, according to research by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.law.uw.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=5281&amp;context=wlr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southwestern Law School professor Beth Caldwell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAztec or Mayan symbols depicting people\u2019s ancestral roots, words or numbers representing places in Mexico or other Latin American countries, religious symbols \u2026 are some examples of tattoo art that has been used to define people as gang members [by law enforcement],\u201d Caldwell wrote. \u201cBut these symbols are not uniquely used to demonstrate gang membership; We\u2019re also not fully accepted as Americans, so we found the streets as our comfort.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incarcerated Mexican Americans in the California prison system <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/la-ca-cm-tattoo-show-nhm-20171126-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created Chicano-style tattoos in the late 20th century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Almost a decade into his career, Nazario says he\u2019s honored to be in a position where he\u2019s tattooing people from different walks of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even though his craft is more widely available now, some designs aren\u2019t for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden in a drawer at his station, one design features a Mexican man and woman above text that reads, \u201cAbolish ICE.\u201d Another shows ice cubes melting, while another is of Martin Luther King Jr. next to a black panther.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-2 vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69d50e7104328\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row article-image\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; I&#8217;m just a regular person who uses my hands and creates art. But amongst all of that, I&#8217;m still able to help the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a sentiment that resonates across tattoo artists in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At In The Clouds tattoo shop on the Far Southwest Side, Aguirre and other tattoo artists host fundraisers for transgender, women\u2019s and immigrant rights. A recent fundraiser, Aguirre said, raised almost $1,000 to support GoFundMes for immigrants\u2019 legal services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Mexican Independence Day, Aguirre and colleagues at In the Clouds created flash, or pre-drawn, designs featuring Mexican gun girls, Aztec warriors and messages such as \u201cF\u2014 ICE\u201d and \u201cLa revoluci\u00f3n no ser\u00e1 televisada\u201d \u2014 \u201cThe revolution will not be televised.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Aguirre has referenced flash from the \u201870s and \u201880s to reflect on the incarceration of Latinos at the time, they said they hope their flash can be looked at by future artists in a similar way: through the lens of their experiences and modern history. Flash tattoos are often direct responses to the historical contexts they were designed in, Aguirre said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHistory continues to repeat itself,\u201d they said. \u201cYou can\u2019t rely on what racism and discrimination looked like in the \u201860s and be like \u2026 \u2018it\u2019s not happening.\u2019 It\u2019s still happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"redefining-chicano\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redefining Chicano<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside using their art for important causes, these tattooers are pushing the Chicano style forward, maintaining their passion for their craft while expanding the Chicano tattooing community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aguirre said they like incorporating more feminine symbols, such as Mexican gun girls, into their tattoo designs. Each generation should do better than the next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Carrillo said his mindset and dedication to his craft stem from his parents, whose work in low-paying, physically demanding jobs laid the foundation for his current life and career.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou could tell us that this is who you think we are.
