As of 2024, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/aapidata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Illinois.pdf\">37,000 Vietnamese people lived in Illinois<\/a>, according to AAPI Data.<\/p>\n<p>After the fall of Saigon in 1975, nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbr.org\/publication\/the-resettlement-of-vietnamese-and-montagnard-refugees-residing-in-thailand\/\">2 million Vietnamese people fearing political persecution fled the country by boat<\/a>, though more than 500,000 people died or disappeared during the journey, according to the National Bureau of Asian Research.<\/p>\n<p>The end of the Vietnam War marked the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/article\/largest-refugee-resettlement-effort-american-history\">the largest refugee resettlement effort in U.S history<\/a>. The arrival of Southeast Asian refugees in the 1970s and \u201880s reshaped U.S. refugee policy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/how-southeast-asian-american-refugees-helped-shape-america-s-resettlement-n1187961\">laid the groundwork for the 1980 Refugee Act<\/a>, a bipartisan bill that formalized the resettlement process and what it meant to be a refugee.<\/p>\n<p>Ngoan Le came to the U.S. as a refugee after the fall of Saigon when she was 19. She studied at Illinois State University before becoming VAI\u2019s first executive director in the 1980s. Le said coming to the U.S. as a refugee escaping war came with unique challenges, including navigating family separations and survivor\u2019s guilt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"img-with-aniamtion-wrap center\" data-max-width=\"100%\" data-max-width-mobile=\"default\" data-shadow=\"none\" data-animation=\"fade-in\"  style=\"margin-top: 3%; Despite those memories, Nguyen said it\u2019s important to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were many horrifying things that happened back then. I still see them in my dreams when I sleep now, but I don\u2019t let those things affect my life too much,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cI found a way to remember them, and then let them go, so that I can move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VAI Executive Director Van Huynh hoped Saturday\u2019s event would be an opportunity for different generations of Vietnamese Americans to come together to reflect on the community that has been growing in Chicago and Illinois and share their hopes for the future of Vietnamese immigrants, refugees, and their children here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do you want for your grandchildren and the generations to come?\u201d Huynh said. \u201cThis is an important question because I am student Dao, the Vietnamese community they found in the city helped them navigate their identity as a Vietnamese American because they grew up in a suburb of Illinois without a large Vietnamese community.<\/p>\n<p>Dao was born in Vietnam but immigrated to the U.S. with their mother when they were two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing everywhere, traveling everywhere and just finding each other despite growth of the Vietnamese community in Uptown is a point of pride, said Nguyen. For over 30 years, Nguyen worked for VAI and helped Vietnamese small businesses open in Uptown.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, new Vietnamese-owned staples such as <a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2025\/01\/09\/chicago-argyle-vietnamese-community-gentrification-cta-renovations-immigrant-communities\/\">HAIBAY\u00d4,<\/a> Fat Miilk coffee and First Sip Cafe have opened in Argyle alongside longtime businesses such as Nh\u00e0 H\u00e0ng Vietnam Restaurant, Furama and Tai Nam Food Market.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, younger generations of business owners, like An Choi Kitchen, fe\u012bn matcha and Kiyomi\u2019s portrait pop-up, sold desserts and crafts alongside older generations selling homemade drinks and food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vegetables from the tropics, that aren\u2019t from here and that you\u2019d have to buy at specific markets \u2014 now, we have plenty of them both in the summer and winter, year-round,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cThis is something I am happy about and proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The success of Vietnamese refugees and younger generations of Vietnamese Americans in the U.S. despite challenges like language barriers reflects decades of hard work and perseverance, Nguyen said.<\/p>\n<p>As he gets older, he hopes younger generations of Vietnamese Americans will carry on the \u201cenergy\u201d of his generation\u2019s work building lives, success and community in Chicago and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The work of community-building for Vietnamese people and other ethnic groups has helped him overcome the challenges of his past, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring[ing] the whole community\u2026up,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cThat\u2019s my dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>
