The suspension also comes as the U.S. has moved to cut <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nprillinois.org\/2025-02-20\/rohingya-refugees-in-bangladesh-feeling-the-impact-of-u-s-international-aid-cuts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign aid to Rohingya refugees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> living abroad. He fled military persecution in the violence-stricken region of Rakhine in 1996. He spent years without legal status in Malaysia, enduring constant fear of arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout documents, life was a constant struggle,\u201d he said. \u201cYou could be detained at any moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 16 years of uncertainty, he resettled in Chicago in 2012. He worked as an interpreter. \u201cI\u2019m the only son in my family. I had to work to support my mother and sister,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jabbar\u2019s mother eventually fled to Bangladesh in 2015. Last year, his sister attempted to cross the border but was arrested by Bangladesh\u2019s Border Guards. \u201cShe\u2019s now detained on an island between Bangladesh and Myanmar,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re demanding money for her release.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the conflict in Myanmar continues, the Rohingya community continues to use every chance they get to flee the country. According to The Business Standard, 58 Rohingyas were detained by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbsnews.net\/bangladesh\/58-rohingyas-detained-while-attempting-enter-bangladesh-1040161\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh Border Guards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fleeing Myanmar to Bangladesh by crossing the border without legal status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-crisis-of-survival\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Crisis of Survival<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingya are a Muslim minority and have been denied citizenship since 1982. They have been subjected to genocide in Myanmar, which has drawn global attention and condemnation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/tag\/rohingya#:~:text=Effectively%20denied%20citizenship%20under%20the,against%20humanity%20and%20possible%20genocide.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one million Rohingya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live in overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, most of whom fled Myanmar\u2019s military crackdown in 2017. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/asia-pacific\/publications\/rakhine-a-famine-in-the-making\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Development Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently warned that Rakhine is on the brink of an \u201cacute famine,\u201d threatening more than two million lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the resettlement process for Rohingya refugees remains painfully slow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/news\/bangladesh\/news\/yunus-urges-expedited-third-country-resettlement-rohingya-refugees-3697481\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdusattor Esoev<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the International Organization for Migration chief of mission in Bangladesh, the resettlement process resumed in 2022 after a 12-year hiatus and only recently started to gather momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alam spent 15 years in Malaysia before resettling in the U.S. in 2011. He described the resettlement process as sluggish. \u201cNo one can tell you how long it will take to be resettled,\u201d he said. \u201cSo many people spend 20-40 years in camps in Malaysia before being resettled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language barriers remain a challenge for Rohingya refugees in the U.S. \u201cIn Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Malaysia, refugees\u2026barely have access to education,\u201d Alam explained. He and Jabbar were both teenagers when they fled Myanmar, but by the time they were resettled in the U.S., they had families to support, making it nearly impossible to return to school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI worked in a factory while taking ESL classes in college,\u201d Alam said. \u201cI even started the Gateway College Program but couldn\u2019t finish it because I had a full-time job.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many, this prolonged limbo means lost opportunities for education. \u201cThe children in camps only have access to education provided by NGOs, which doesn\u2019t exceed from grade fourth,\u201d Jabbar said. \u201cThe situation of the camps in most countries is not good &#8211; people live in poor conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"policy-barriers-and-uncertain-futures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Policy Barriers and Uncertain Futures<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration\u2019s suspension of refugee admissions has had a devastating impact on families like Alam and Jabbar\u2019s. The policy allows exceptions only on a case-by-case basis if deemed in the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/realigning-the-united-states-refugee-admissions-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The policy has left many Rohingya refugees stranded in overcrowded camps or in countries where they lack legal status and have access to limited resources like education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alam, whose brother has been waiting to be resettled in Malaysia for over a decade, witnessed firsthand how Trump\u2019s policies upended lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the executive order, Rohingya refugees in Malaysia panicked, he said. \u201cSome refugees waiting to receive their flight tickets quit their jobs, broke their leases, and sold and gave away their furniture\u2014thinking they were finally about to be resettled. Then everything was put on hold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suspension of refugee admissions has also disrupted the work of organizations like RefugeeOne, which assists refugees and newcomers in rebuilding their lives. \u201cIf the 90-day hold policy is maintained over time\u2026 it will hinder not just our ability [as an organization] but America&#8217;s ability to be a place of refuge,\u201d said Rich Hees, the development director at RefugeeOne. \u201cThat has been a part of our nation&#8217;s heritage and tradition from the beginning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rohingya refugees in Chicago, the emotional toll of separation is heavy. ShahAlam Ali, who was resettled in the U.S. in 2020, noted that many families remain heartbroken over being separated from loved ones. \u201cThey had hope\u2026but since Trump&#8217;s administration\u2026they are abandoning their hopes,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the uncertainty, the Rohingya Cultural Center on the city\u2019s north side remains a beacon of hope.
