Meanwhile, Harris has leaned on her career as a prosecutor and attorney general as she\u2019s toughened her stance on initiatives to fortify the southern border.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"templatera_shortcode\">\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69e769c66cf0c\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row vc_row-o-equal-height vc_row-flex vc_row-o-content-middle small\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; \" class=\"vc_col-sm-5 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column neg-marg no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"   data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"wpb_raw_code wpb_raw_html wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"_form_1\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.bluelena.io\/f\/embed.php?id=1\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across party lines, registered voters are looking at how Trump and Harris will respond to immigration \u2014\u00a0although a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/09\/09\/issues-and-the-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">larger share of registered Republicans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say immigration is very important to them when casting their vote, according to Pew Research Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comes after a steep increase in migration to the U.S. following the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/01\/migrant-encounters-at-u-s-mexico-border-have-fallen-sharply-in-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">border encounters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/cbp-enforcement-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit a seven-year peak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2023 before falling sharply in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDemocrats and Republicans are \u2014 not quite agree[ing] on \u2014 but are converging around the fact that the U.S.-Mexico border is not manageable with the tools that we currently have,\u201d said Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh, an associate policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute.\u00a0 \u201cThough the solutions remain quite different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Harris has shifted her stance on the border to align more closely with Trump, the candidates diverge on pledges around asylum, temporary protected status and deportation. He also plans to reinstitute the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as his \u2018Remain in Mexico\u2019 policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/mexico-rejects-effort-reinstate-remain-mexico-policy-asylum\/story?id=96939554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oftentimes in dangerous conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 during their immigration court proceedings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his second term, Trump vows to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7022828\/trump-travel-ban-refugees-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinstate his Muslim travel ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which barred immigrants from six <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu-wa.org\/pages\/timeline-muslim-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. President Biden later <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/muslim-ban-gone-now-what\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reversed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ban.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDay one, I will seal the border,\u201d the former president said at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvia.org\/news\/local\/2024-10-09\/trump-pledges-in-scranton-speech-to-seal-the-border-on-day-1-and-end-transgender-insanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pennsylvania rally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in October. \u201c&#8230;and we will begin the largest deportation operation in the history of our country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">After years of building up foreign countries, we are finally going to build up our Country, defend our borders, and protect our cities. However, immigration courts across the country face a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2024\/05\/14\/immigration-court-federal-backlog-attorney-shortages-new-arrivals-chicago-illinois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large backlog of ongoing cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that make the asylum process long, and many asylum cases take years to complete. rally in Aurora, Colorado, Trump pledged to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to pursue \u2018Operation Aurora,\u2019 an effort that would deport immigrants in the state whom Trump has blamed for crime and violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/alien-and-sedition-acts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alien Enemies Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has only been used three other times in U.S. history \u2014\u00a0during the War of 1812, World War I, and World War II. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/19\/nx-s1-5156027\/alien-enemies-act-1798-trump-immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centuries-old law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows a president to detain, relocate or deport noncitizens from a country considered an \u2018enemy\u2019 of the U.S. during wartime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variety of sources have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siepr.stanford.edu\/news\/mythical-tie-between-immigration-and-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debunked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the disinformation that migrants increase crime in cities and states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has also expressed a desire to support \u2018merit-based\u2019 immigration, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationpolicy.org\/article\/harris-trump-election-border\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the barriers to obtaining U and T visas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for victims of crimes and human trafficking, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/litigation-certainty-trumps-call-end-birthright-citizenship-face-mount-rcna162314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end birthright citizenship,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and limit protections for Afghans and Ukrainians with humanitarian parole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former president has been outspoken about programs like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/humanitarian\/temporary-protected-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary Protected Status<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TPS). DACA protects people who were brought to the country without documentation as children, while TPS protects those who cannot return to their home countries because of unsafe conditions. He previously ordered the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/20\/us\/haitians-temporary-status.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end of the TPS program for Haitians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017, resulting in the displacement of more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4913673-trump-recoke-haitian-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300,000 Haitian immigrants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who faced deportation due to the sudden end of their protected status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his term, <a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2019\/11\/12\/dreamers-attend-supreme-court-arguments-today-in-the-case-against-trumps-move-to-end-daca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump attempted to end DACA by barring new applications<\/a> from being accepted. After the Supreme Court sided with DACA recipients, also known as \u201cDreamers,\u201d Trump vowed again to end DACA in 2020. The program <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/daca-program-appeals-court-legal-challenge-rcna174900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:
