The rollout will begin this week and run through the end of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city\u2019s \u201cOne System Initiative\u201d aims to address long-standing inequities in shelter systems by combining them into one comprehensive service network, according to city officials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"templatera_shortcode\">\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_69de9ff6e7f20\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row vc_row-o-equal-height vc_row-flex vc_row-o-content-middle small\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; said Mayor Brandon Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, city and state officials announced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2024\/10\/17\/chicago-homelessness-migrants-new-arrivals-shelters-one-system-initative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommendations for the merger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after gathering feedback from community organizations. Under the plan, city officials will add 3,800 beds from the migrant shelter system to the 3,000 beds currently offered for individuals experiencing homelessness. The new and existing migrant shelters would be operated by community organizations, replacing the controversial vendor Favorite Staffing, who has overseen many of the migrant shelters in Chicago.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now, we have about 557 Favorite staff,\u201d said Brandie Knazze, commissioner of Chicago\u2019s Department of Family and Support Services. \u201cAnd so as we close out this mission, we will close out the Favorite contract as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fws_69de9ff6ed32b\" officials explained the decision to wind down the migrant shelter system and begin investing in a unified system comes as the number of new arrivals entering Chicago has decreased in recent months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know that it is the right time,\u201d said Beatriz Ponce de Le\u00f3n, the city\u2019s deputy mayor for Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights. \u201cThe city has not received a bus in the area since mid-June, and arrivals at the Landing Zone are much lower.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the new plan, the city and state will also reinstate its rental assistance program to help with the housing needs of shelter residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city could face challenges when implementing this new system.
