You are our fellow human beings, and you deserve better.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the face of mounting criticism, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city was investigating Jean Carlo\u2019s death and would update safety protocols based on their findings. The five-year-old\u2019s death has underscored<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2023\/12\/14\/investigation-chicago-migrant-shelter-pilsen-dangerous\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> growing concerns about the safety of the city\u2019s temporary shelters <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that have been hurriedly opened to house thousands of migrants bused and flown into the city from Texas and other Southern states.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChicago continues to prioritize safety and improving our New Arrivals Mission, but any life lost prematurely is a grave tragedy,\u201d Johnson said in a statement Monday. \u201cThe death of a child is a deeply tragic event, and our condolences go out to the Martinez Rivero family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2023\/12\/18\/5-dies-shelter-venezuelan-migrant-dangerous-conditions-chicago\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five-year-old boy became sick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was taken to Comer\u2019s Children\u2019s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The boy\u2019s death came three days after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2023\/12\/14\/investigation-chicago-migrant-shelter-pilsen-dangerous\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borderless released an investigation on the shelter\u2019s inhumane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including a lack of medical care and the rationing of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City officials have struggled to house thousands of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/category\/after-the-buses-venezuelan-migrants-chicago\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migrants bused and flown in from Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other border states over the last 15 months. Some 30<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/sites\/texas-new-arrivals\/home\/Dashboard.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,000 migrants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have arrived since August 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/sites\/texas-new-arrivals\/home\/Dashboard.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the city\u2019s public dashboard.<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city is housing nearly 14,000 migrants across 27 temporary shelters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott charted a private plane carrying 100 asylum seekers to Chicago, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2023\/12\/20\/texas-chartered-private-plane-to-fly-migrants-to-ohare\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handlers fleeing before being questioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by police, Block Club Chicago reported. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is human trafficking,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one advocate said of Texas officials&#8217; tactics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are at a critical point in the humanitarian crisis and the city is facing the challenge to provide shelter for the daily influx of new arrivals sent to Chicago from the southern border,\u201d Johnson said in a statement. \u201cAll temporary emergency shelters that have been opened were selected due to the large capacity they can safely serve; the facility is in good condition, requires minimal upgrades and are available for emergency activation within a short timeframe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before opening, city officials told Pilsen residents at a community meeting that the shelter would eventually house 1,000 people, but the number of residents has more than doubled in a short period. They lamented the harsh shelter conditions, including cramped living quarters, mistreatment from workers, freezing temperatures, and unsanitary bathrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent weeks, migrants described outbreaks of various illnesses, including chickenpox, the flu, and upper respiratory infections, spreading without sufficient medical attention. Some people who were sick were being isolated in parts of the shelter, according to migrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several other people in the shelter, including three children, have been hospitalized with upper respiratory infections. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the Chicago Department of Public Health said those illnesses did not appear related, there was no evidence of an outbreak at the shelter, and the boy\u2019s death did not appear to have been from an infectious disease. The five-year-old\u2019s autopsy is still pending, according to the Medical Examiner\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside the shelter, migrants said staff has been doubling down on threats to kick out anyone caught filming or taking photos inside the shelter. During a recent medical emergency, migrants said staff turned off lights and scolded some people for trying to look through windows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When city officials did a walk-through earlier this week following outcries from Chicagoans over the shelter\u2019s conditions, migrants told Borderless that shelter staff replenished bathrooms with toilet paper and soap only to remove them after city officials had left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need help getting out of here,\u201d one man said. \u201cThere are a lot of people with respiratory problems, with high fevers. Do you understand how raggedy and how evil that is? [You\u2019re] just going to put people on a bus and drop them off in the middle of the night? And then you want to hold us accountable for something that\u2019s happening down at the border? It\u2019s sickening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<blockquote><p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis shelter is not liveable for anyone.&#8221;<\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson said the city provides onsite medical care, but told reporters migrants were showing up sick, traumatized and hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe governor of Texas needs to take a look in the mirror of the chaos that he is causing for this country. This is not just a Chicago dynamic. He is attacking our country \u2014 the sensibility and the civility of our country. He is attacking that,\u201d Johnson said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the combative press conference, Johnson dismissed a reporter\u2019s question on whether the city would re-evaluate housing people in warehouses not meant for habitation. \u201cHow about we re-evaluate all of our international policies that are causing the chaos that we are experiencing right now? And let\u2019s evaluate the sanctity of someone in Texas who disregards people. That\u2019s what we should be re-evaluating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a collective group of volunteers across Chicago said the boy\u2019s death was a result of disregard for health and safety standards. The coalition of mutual aid groups has warned the city about shelter conditions for months and has stepped in to try to address the needs of migrants where the city has fallen short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was a preventable death. And it was 100% expected,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hodgdon said at the vigil Wednesday night.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe knew this was coming.
