They\u2019re just dozens of the thousands of migrants sent here from Texas since last summer.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, they were arriving on buses. Over 3,000 people have called 311 for shelter support in recent weeks, city hall spokesperson Cesar Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 7,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago via buses and planes since August 2022,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2022\/12\/07\/after-the-buses-meet-the-migrants-at-the-center-of-texas-manufactured-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began sending migrants who crossed the United States-Mexico border into Texas to Democrat-led cities<\/a>\u00a0to protest federal immigration policies. The U.S.\u2019s patchwork of immigration policies leaves it unclear if many of them are eligible for asylum or other protections.<\/p>\n<p>City officials expect the number of migrants sent here to continue to grow, Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>Frannier Estrada flew into Chicago from San Antonio Tuesday with her partner and their 5-year-old son and were staying outside Haymarket\u2019s office Wednesday after being directed there by a police officer. The city said there is \u201cno coordination\u201d happening right now between the city and government entities or community organizations in Texas, Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not know if the travel is being sponsored,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the city is transporting migrants to city spaces, including \u201cnewly established respite centers,\u201d to wait for shelter placement, Rodriguez said. Some migrants have been staying at police stations and libraries. If someone is seeking shelter at the airport they\u2019re trained to tell them to leave and report it to police officers, \u201cwho are fed up too,\u201d the guard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s left to us to be the bad guys, because they don\u2019t want to invest in dealing with this issue and facing the frontlines,\u201d said the guard, who had once experienced homelessness himself. \u201cThey get outside security companies and other providers to take care of it.
