Borderless Magazine is a multilingual nonprofit newsroom reporting on and with Chicago immigrants;<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/newsletter\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sign up for its weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ELK GROVE VILLAGE \u2014 Carrying a bag of clothes and a plate of food, 21-year-old Delwuins\u2019 hands were full when a nonprofit worker came up and offered him more help: socks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the middle of September, and nonprofits Taste for the Homeless and House of Restoration were hosting a dinner and donation drive for the nearly 100 immigrants staying at a hotel near O\u2019Hare Airport in the suburbs. All of them, including Delwuins, who asked not to use his last name, recently arrived in Chicago from Texas under Gov. He had food and shelter but no phone and no knowledge of the place he\u2019d landed in. He was on his own, separated from his family for the first time in his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delwuins and his family traveled for three months from Venezuela to the Mexico-United States border \u2014 then were sent to different shelters after being processed by immigration officials in Texas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His parents and his two younger brothers were sent to New York, while Delwuins was only given the option of taking a free bus to Chicago, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Delwuins\u2019 family tries their luck in New York, he is doing the same here. Or he could move to Cincinnati, where he has cousins who have been in the country for about a year. Wherever he goes, his plan is to \u201cwork, work, work\u201d \u2014 \u201ctrabajo, trabajo, trabajo.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI haven\u2019t gotten to know much of Chicago, but I like what I\u2019ve seen,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"a-dream-of-traveling\"><b>A Dream Of Traveling<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly a month later, Delwuins sat in the shade of the hotel\u2019s parking lot, proudly donning a donated Illinois Wesleyan University sweatshirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll invite you to my graduation,\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he sipped coffee, Delwuins described the warm, picturesque waters near his hometown of Valencia, Venezuela.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s delicious, crystal-clear,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s lots and lots of fish. You don\u2019t need [goggles] \u2026 because it was so clear.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delwuins had been staying at the suburban hotel for more than a month. He was grateful for the comfortable place to stay, but he was getting bored of his daily routine of watching TV and hanging out with the other folks staying in the hotel, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a car, Delwuins was stuck in the suburbs. Without a legal work permit, his options for work are limited. Delwuins said he hopes he can get a job \u201cunder the table.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back home, Delwuins used to work at a stall selling trinkets and accessories, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThings for women, like hair bands and bracelets,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difficulties Delwuins and his family faced in Venezuela were enough to make them embark on a three-month trek to the United States. Delwuins said the mud on certain paths could be brutal, coming all the way up to their knees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they finally arrived at the border, Delwuins was sent to a different shelter than the rest of his family because he was older than the kids they were letting into family shelters, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey separate you because you\u2019re older,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there are various places they take immigrants because there\u2019s so many, they don\u2019t fit in just one place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who didn\u2019t have money were encouraged to hop on free buses, Delwuins said. His only option was Chicago, which he didn\u2019t know anything about but figured wasn\u2019t a bad option once he learned it was close to Cincinnati.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delwuins misses his family, but they\u2019re making the best of the situation, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they don\u2019t do well there, then they come here. If they do well there, I\u2019ll go to them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Delwuins arrived in Chicago, he was taken to a refugee center, he said. He doesn\u2019t remember where it was, but it was like a church without furniture, he said. After a few days there, he and about 100 other people were taken to a hotel in the suburbs near O\u2019Hare Airport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"nectar_single_testimonial\" tabindex=\"0\" data-color=\"default\" data-style=\"small_modern\"><div class=\"inner\"> <p><span class=\"open-quote\">&#8221;<\/span>I have a dream \u2014 I came here because I want to travel,\u201d Delwuins said. \u201cIndia, Saudi Arabia, China and all the countries I can.\u201d <\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After nearly a month of being cooped up inside, Delwuins said he was eager to explore Chicago. He wants to go to the beach and dance in a nightclub. He wants to do the things normal 21-year-olds do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he\u2019s settled and has money saved up, he knows what he\u2019ll spend it on, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have a dream \u2014 I came here because I want to travel,\u201d Delwuins said. \u201cIndia, Saudi Arabia, China and all the countries I can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delwuins has done his research, and he knows exactly what he wants to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartagena, Colombia, is a must-see vacation spot, with its beautiful beaches and historical architecture \u2014 including centuries-old walls that were built to protect the city from pirate attacks, Delwuins said. The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the world\u2019s largest salt flat, is completely clear, like a mirror, he\u2019s deciphered from pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, Delwuins moved to Cincinnati to join his cousins. Things were working out well, he said, and he&#8217;d landed a job cleaning hotel rooms. He wished the pay was better, but the job brought him one step closer to traveling, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce I have a lot of money, my first trip is going to be to India,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m going to eat rare but delicious foods, go to a strange nightclub and do everything typical on a vacation.
