Borderless Magazine is a multilingual nonprofit newsroom reporting on and with Chicago immigrants;<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/newsletter\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sign up for its weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HUMBOLDT PARK \u2014 Maikel Jose Tineo stepped off a plane at a Chicago airport in late September with a backpack, a phone and an address.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend Tineo made during the 40-day journey from Colombia to the United States-Mexico border arrived in Chicago ahead of him and told Tineo about a temporary shelter welcoming asylum seekers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three days later, the 21-year-old was sitting outside the Salvation Army Freedom Center in Humboldt Park, where he lives with hundreds of other young immigrants. Overall, 3,600 people have come to Chicago since late August, most bused here under Texas Gov. Greg Abbott\u2019s push to send immigrants to Democrat-led cities to protest federal immigration policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Tineo wasn\u2019t sent on a bus. A native of the Venezuelan state Anzo\u00e1tegui, Tineo lived in Colombia for four years before making the months-long journey to the United States-Mexico border, mostly on foot. Instead of a 24-hour bus ride, he arrived in Chicago on a three-hour flight after a friend he made on the road suggested joining him in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Tineo\u2019s journey here was different, his story is similar to other recent immigrants to Chicago: He wants a job, an apartment and a car, and he\u2019s eager to learn English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI arrived in Chicago, thank God,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I\u2019ve seen has been beautiful, very nice and gorgeous. He washes dishes for minimum wage, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the money Tineo earned, he bought a bike and started paying off debt he owes from his journey to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI haven\u2019t been able to pool much,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that hasn\u2019t stopped Tineo from exploring and dreaming of the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got on the bus here one day, and I went all the way to the lake and started walking,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending time on the lakefront reminded Tineo of his coastal hometown in Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He left his family in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, when he was 16 to move to Colombia, where there were more opportunities to make money, he said. It was a risk. I got a job, and later I got my own room. But it was hard on me in Colombia. It was very hard. The economy went downhill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tineo lived in Colombia for four years, he said, but it was becoming clear he could no longer afford to stay. When friends said they were about to embark on a treacherous journey to the United States, he made the split-second decision to join them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His friends were buying bus tickets to get to the jungle between Colombia and Panama \u2014 The Dari\u00e9n Gap \u2014 as the starting point of their trip before embarking on foot the rest of the way. They told Tineo they would pay for his bus ticket and he could pay them back later, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I was in shock because I thought about the United States \u2014 I had always dreamed of it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I was also very scared because I didn\u2019t have money and I wasn\u2019t prepared. Once he arrived in Texas and was processed at the border, Tineo thought he would try his luck there, he said. But he decided to move after he worked a construction job for a week and wasn\u2019t paid for it, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people Tineo worked for in Texas bought him a cellphone and clothes, so he was able to get in touch with a friend who had already arrived in Chicago. He originally thought about going to New York since there were \u201clots and lots of Venezuelans\u201d there, but his friend lent him money for a plane ticket to Chicago, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe recommended [I come] here,\u201d Tineo said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tineo doesn\u2019t know if he\u2019ll have a better quality of life in Chicago than Colombia. He likes the city so far, but he\u2019s had scares along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early October, one of Tineo\u2019s close friends ended up in the hospital. Tineo couldn\u2019t visit because he wasn\u2019t family. Instead, he was stuck anxiously waiting for updates at the shelter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And one night, Tineo got lost biking home from work back to the shelter. A trip that should\u2019ve taken 15 minutes took him nearly two hours as he wandered in the dark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, Tineo had just enough phone battery to use a virtual map to guide him home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome streets scare me because I\u2019m alone,\u201d he said. \u201cThe streets are very long, and there\u2019s strangers, you know? I wasted my time there.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/inequality-poverty-opportunity\/workers-rights\/cheated-at-work\/garment-immigrant-workers-wage-theft\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undocumented immigrant workers are frequently victims of wage theft,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and employees often find themselves without any recourse to get what they\u2019re owed. Tineo won\u2019t be eligible to apply for asylum, which he needs to get a work permit, until October of next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tineo wanted to file a complaint with someone, but he doesn\u2019t know who to ask for help. He\u2019s thinking about moving \u2014 and wondering if he would\u2019ve had better luck staying in Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tineo said he hadn\u2019t made up his mind about what to do next. After living at the Salvation Army shelter for almost two months with hundreds of men, Tineo was moved to a hotel near Downtown, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s difficult for Tineo to sit around and have nothing to do. He wants to make a life \u2014 and now, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m someone who always wants to do things fast,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m very restless. I don\u2019t like to wait and wait.
