Greg Abbott\u2019s protest of federal immigration policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community activist and photographer The Kid from Pilsen happened to be walking by as Castillo was out searching for a job. I trained day and practically at night,\u201d Castillo said in Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo\u2019s parents \u201cgave everything\u201d to support his baseball endeavors, even though \u201cthey did not have anything to give,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Castillo got injured, his family couldn\u2019t come up with the money needed for medical procedures and physical therapy to get him back on the ball field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his life\u2019s dreams benched, Castillo moved to Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, where he worked in construction, delivered packages on his motorcycle and bartended to support his family back home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has not been easy for me, but I know that everything has a purpose in this life, and I know that doors will open,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After five years in Colombia, Castillo still wasn\u2019t earning enough to support himself or his family in Venezuela. His 6-year-old daughter has health problems and needs medical attention, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s been years \u2013 five years &#8230; without being able to hug them, without being able to be with them,\u201d he said. To Castillo, his daughter is his \u201clife.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo set out to work in the United States. I crossed eight countries practically with $200, it was the only thing that was in my pocket,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the journey, Castillo\u2019s group came across a young, injured girl in the Dari\u00e9n Gap, a treacherous jungle between Colombia and Panama. Castillo stopped to help her, but his friends abandoned him, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had no food or money \u2013 and I never thought I would go through that. But I practically ate garbage at night,\u201d Castillo said, pausing as tears welled in his eyes. \u201cEven at night, I cried alone because I had no company or anything, but that&#8217;s all there was to it. And I know that those moments make me very strong now to not give up, to keep fighting for what I want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo continued on through tough conditions and heavy rainfall; he was always drenched, he said. Without a tent, he slept on the riverbank. He ran out of food, then the water swept away the little bit of clothes and cargo he had left, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe river rose and took everything, everything, everything, everything. It was something tremendous because it seemed like a movie,\u201d Castillo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he could communicate with his parents, he didn\u2019t tell them of the hardships because he \u201cdidn\u2019t want to worry them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though they don&#8217;t know my story, they are very proud of me,\u201d he said. \u201cI am here because of God&#8217;s will. Its destination: Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI \u2026 thought a lot, and I said, \u2018Well, there are a lot of sports there. There are two major league baseball teams,\u2019\u201d Castillo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo reconnected with the girl he helped along the journey online. She also made it across the border and is living near Washington, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<h3 id=\"i-was-simply-just-asking-about-a-job-and-he-offered-me-his-hand\"><strong>\u2018I Was Simply Just Asking About A Job. And He Offered Me His Hand\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kid from Pilsen\u2019s heart was full on D\u00eda de los Muertos, as the holiday meant he would be able to honor friends lost to gun violence in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He sat Castillo down to show him a photography documentary, subtitled in Spanish,\u00a0 and his own Sony camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kid got Castillo a fresh haircut, introduced him to his favorite Chicago foods and shared his passion for photography with his new friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo said he\u2019s a very quiet person \u2014 but he\u2019s changed since he first held the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like it when I put the camera on my shoulder. I feel different, like I&#8217;m someone else, [someone] bigger,\u201d Castillo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the second day of D\u00eda de los Muertos, Castillo photographed The Kid circulating petitions at the Muertos de la Risa procession in Pilsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s a natural at it,\u201d The Kid said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon, Castillo incorporated different angles into his photography and developed an eye for documenting key moments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castillo is four years older than The Kid and their friendship has grown quickly, they said. They\u2019ve shared lessons with each other, whether it\u2019s a new word in a foreign language or adding hot chips to a sandwich enhances the flavor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a moment of desperation, I was simply just asking about a job,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cAnd he offered me his hand.
