The organization is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/1660\/text\">working to reintroduce legislation<\/a> that would remove barriers for immigrants to access Medicaid and purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n<p>Borderless Magazine spoke with Joy Pettigrew, a Chicago-based campaign coordinator with NAPAWF\u2019s Reproductive Justice Commission, about what the end of Roe v. Wade means for the AAPI community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"divider-wrap\" data-alignment=\"default\"><div style=\"margin-top: 12.5px; height: 1px; margin-bottom: 12.5px;\" data-width=\"100%\" data-animate=\"\" data-animation-delay=\"\" data-color=\"default\" class=\"divider-border\"><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><b>Borderless Magazine: <\/b>What kind of work does your organization do?<\/p>\n<p><b>Joy Pettigrew: <\/b>NAPAWF builds power with AAPI women and girls to influence critical decisions that affect their lives, families and communities. One of the big focuses for NAPAWF is reproductive justice. A lot of movements focus on making abortion legal \u2026 but we recognize that for AAPI communities, that&#8217;s not enough.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion could be legal, but many women of color can&#8217;t afford it, or can&#8217;t access it, or have to travel hundreds of miles to the nearest clinics. So even where there might be choice, there is no choice, because there&#8217;s no access. Roe v. Wade being overturned really harms AAPI communities and women of color in general.<\/p>\n<p><b>Borderless Magazine: <\/b>And how does the Supreme Court decision affect AAPI community members in particular?<\/p>\n<p><b>Joy Pettigrew: <\/b>It is an attack on reproductive freedom, and therefore it is a direct assault on Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/fact-sheet\/public-opinion-on-abortion\/\">seven out of 10 Asian Americans<\/a> support legal abortion, and actually <a href=\"https:\/\/intersectionsofourlives.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ISOOL_Fact-Sheet-Summary-AAPI-Women-final.pdf\">85% of AAPI women believe that women should have the right to make their own reproductive choices<\/a>. Also, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/beyond-abortion\/\">third of AAPI pregnancies end in abortion<\/a>. That makes it really difficult or impossible to get time off of work and money for transportation and overnight accommodations to travel for an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s such diversity [in how we] define AAPI. A lot of data is aggregated data, it <a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2022\/05\/02\/disaggregation-data-justice-asian-americans\/\">isn\u2019t collected around specific ethnicities<\/a>, like how abortion care is utilized in the Vietnamese American community versus the Japanese American or Chinese American communities. There\u2019s a lot of misunderstanding [because of] how we\u2019re always grouped and seen as a monolith or a model minority.<\/p>\n<p>Many AAPI families are bilingual. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">Pew Research report <\/a>reveals that 66% of AAPIs speak a language other than English at home. It is challenging to navigate the healthcare system and to ensure that you&#8217;re getting the best care with the barrier of language access.<\/p>\n<p>There are also intersectional issues that have compounded impacts on AAPI women and their ability to access reproductive care and health care in general. Many women come to the U.S. as spouses of immigrants and are issued dependent visas, which may or may not grant work authorization. We know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">six out of 10 Asian Americans are immigrants<\/a>, and are <a href=\"http:\/\/aapidata.com\/blog\/asian-undoc-1in7\/\">16% [of the undocumented population]<\/a>. So there is a level of heightened fear around criminalization.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of misinformation on what is legal and what is not legal when it comes to abortion care \u2026 And within immigrant communities, there are old cultural stigmas that discourage conversations around reproductive health.<\/p>\n<p><b>Borderless Magazine: <\/b>What is NAPAWF doing to change that?<\/p>\n<p><b>Joy Pettigrew:<\/b> Part of what NAPAWF is seeking to do is to be a bridge between AAPI advocacy spaces and gender reproductive justice spaces.<\/p>\n<p>An example of that is that NAPAWF\u2019s New York City Chapter, [which] recently partnered with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice to advance a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/a10148#:~:text=A10148%20%2D%20Summary,facilitate%20access%20to%20abortion%20care.\">reproductive freedom and equity act<\/a>, which ensures that pregnant New Yorkers have abortion access regardless of health insurance status.<\/p>\n<p>NAPAWF is also conducting research on medication [for] abortion use within AAPI [communities]. If you really think about reproductive justice, it&#8217;s about \u2026 accessing contraception, good and comprehensive sex education, STI (sexually transmitted infection) prevention and care, alternative birth options, adequate prenatal pregnancy care, domestic violence, even being safe to raise a child and all the systemic realities around that.<\/p>\n<p>We are advocating for an intersectional lens in which you think about race and ethnicity, about access to health, and reproductive issues.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the campaign I&#8217;ve been working on in Chicago is to create a reproductive justice commission on a city level. The hope is to have a structure on a city-level where community members, providers, and the people impacted most get to influence policy and address the intersectional issues that impact us.
